Cherokee County, surrounding areas prepare for inclement weather

by Staff reports

National Weather Service – Shreveport has forecast shower and thunderstorm activity for Cherokee County and surrounding areas, including parts of Arkansas, Louisiana and Oklahoma, today and Tuesday.

According to NWS reports these will increase late afternoon Monday and especially into the evening hours ahead of a strong storm system moving into the area.

“Some of these storms may be severe across much of the area with large hail, damaging winds, and isolated tornadoes all possible. In addition, locally heavy rainfall and flash flooding will be possible through the overnight hours as showers and thunderstorms slow their eastward movement,” officials reported. “Widespread rainfall amounts of two to four inches will be possible with isolated higher amounts possible for portions of the area. The severe and flash flood threat should diminish from west to east on Tuesday as the system begins to move out.”

Meanwhile, a flash flood warning has been issued for Angelina River Near Lufkin, affecting Cherokee, Nacogdoches and Angelina Counties, with minor flooding forecast. Until further notice.

Also, NWS has issued a wind advisory for the area, effective until 1 a.m. Tuesday.

Southeast winds will be 15 to 20 mph with gusts up to 40 mph expected this afternoon, with strong winds and rough waves creating hazardous conditions for small craft on area lakes.
