As a child he was very curious about radio and how it works. Young Dick loved to take walks with his grandpa. At the age of 10 he was given the opportunity of checking out the local radio station, KEBE. He worked at KEBE until he left Jacksonville for college. He was called to preach during his high school years. He married Nancy Lee Liles from Jacksonville on May 18, 1956. They celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary last May.

As he went through college and seminary, he supported himself and his family by working at radio stations around the state. He graduated from seminary in Austin as an evangelist. He spread God’s message to many places in many ways. He became the director of Austin Teen Challenge in the early 1970’s and served there for many years. He spread the gospel in many churches, filling in for pastors or just helping with groups that are teaching God’s word. He also continued to work with radio stations to keep them on the air when necessary.
In 2012 he was inducted into the Texas Radio Hall of Fame. He has been very active in church leadership as well as working for radio stations. He was preceded in death by his parents, Wilson and Helen Pickens and son, John Scott Pickens.
