CHEROKEE COUNTY – As a lead-up to the rebuild of a grass house at Caddo Mounds State Historic Site, a full day of activities are planned Saturday, Jan. 22, at the 1649 Texas Highway West site.

Sponsored by Friends of Caddo Mounds Inc. and site officials the day begins with “Rise and Shine,” in which volunteers will cut grass from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.; bring sack lunch and water.

Then, join guest speakers from 3:30-5 p.m. as they discuss upcoming programs and events at Caddo Mounds, as well as celebrate the rebuilding of a grass house that was lost in the April 2019 tornado. Guest speaker is Dr. Leslie Bush, who will present “The Archeology of Caddo Building Materials and Landscapes.”

As evening approaches, stay awhile longer for a star party from 5:30-9:30 p.m., with Tyler Junior College physics and astronomy professor Dr. Douglas Parson guiding visitors as they enjoy a heavenly show.
