Volunteers traveled to the Texas A&M Research Center in Overton to gather switchgrass for a grass house that will constructed this summer at the Caddo Mounds State Historic Site. A similar structure erected several years ago was destroyed by a tornado that ripped through the Alto area in April 2019.

A Jan. 22 official kick-off event for the summer 2022 Grass House Rebuild is as follows:

9 a.m. to 1 p.m. – Rise and Shine for grass collection at the East Texas Plant Materials Center

3-5 p.m. – Join Dr. Leslie Bush to learn what paleobotany has to teach us about the construction of Caddo homes and the activities that took place in and around them.

5:30-9:30 p.m. – Campfires & Stargazing with Tyler Junior College professor of physics, Douglas Parsons.
