A first day hike at Mission Tejas State Park, at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 1, takes visitors on some of the mission’s oldest trails, so wear appropriate clothing and footwear, and bring water. The mission is located at 19343 State Highway 21 East in Grapeland. While the program is free of charge, admission for visitors ages 13 and older is $3.
Sorting practice begins at 2:05 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 1, at J-C Cowboy Church of Cherokee County, located at 6242 FM 2493 East in Troup. Admission is $7 per person, beginners welcome.

Church service will resume at Dialville UMC Jan. 2. John Thomas will serve as pastor. Service will be at 8:50 each Sunday. Thomas also serves as Pastor at Troup UMC each week.

The Cherokee County Conservatives will meet at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 6, at Hong Kong Buffet in Jacksonville. David Covey, SD-3 State Republican Executive Committee-man, is guest speaker. The public is invited and encouraged to attend. For more information call 903-687-6870.
“As You Were,” a new veterans’ peer group in Cherokee County, begins meeting at the Rusk Lions Club on U.S. Highway 84 on the first and third Thursdays of the month, beginning Jan. 6, 2022. Share your stories, make new friends, find/give support. A grass house volunteer workday is slated at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 8, at Caddo Mounds State Historic Park on Texas Highway 21.
The Alto Buyers’ Group will host its annual Chili Cook-off & Dessert Auction, 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 8, at the Alto Fire Station, located at 402 W. San Antonio Hwy. The event benefits the Cloverleaf 4H Club and the Alto FFA. Tickets are $5 at the door, with serving starting at 5:30 p.m. Contestants wishing to enter a pot of child can pre-register with Spencer Smith or Amanda Low by emailing [email protected].

Spring classes at Jacksonville College begin Jan. 11, with walk-in registration planned Jan. 7 and Jan. 10.

A Jan. 14 East Texas Fruit, Nut and Vegetable Conference at Cross Brand Cowboy Church in Tyler will offer both professional and amateur gardeners suggestions on cultivating a variety of produce in East Texas. Cost is $25 per person and includes lunch; an East Region AgriLife Conference and Expo will be held at the location at the same time. Friends of Caddo Mounds SHS will host an online meeting, 6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 20.

Caddo Mounds State Historic Site will host kick-off events for its Grass House rebuild, Friday and Saturday, Jan. 21-22, at the Texas Highway 21 site.

The BMA Theological Seminary in Jacksonville begins its Spring Semester Jan. 24.
JAN 26
The Greater Rusk Area Garden Club will meet at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 26, at the Rusk library. Members and guests are encouraged to attend.

DNOW, featuring Breakaway Worship and Robert White, will be hosted Jan. 28-30 at First Baptist Church in Rusk for youths in grades 7-12. Cost is $30 per person. Register online at www.ruskfbc.com.
