Ensure a pet-safe environment at New Year’s
CHEROKEE COUNTY – The very same sights that bring delight to humans during the holiday season often mean something different to pets, according to Kate Kimble, a veterinary student at the Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences.
Kimble warned that pet owners should be cautious of allowing their pets outdoors during fireworks shows, as the loud noises and lights might spook an animal and cause them to flee their yard.
“To ensure the safety of pets during a fireworks display, keep them inside or away from the fireworks, in an area in which they are shielded from the loud noises, bright lights, and sparks,” she said.
The Humane Society of the United States offers the following suggestions:
• Keep your pet safely away from fireworks
• If your pet is scared by fireworks, ask a veterinarian for help
• Safeguard your pet with a collar and ID tag; also consider a microchip that you activate
Should a pet bolt from fear, search your neighborhood, contact local animal control agencies, animal shelters and rescues.
Post notices with online social media groups in your area and in person at places where people can see them easily if allowed by city ordinace: At intersections, stores, post offices – include a photo of your pet.
If you find a lost pet, and the animal has an ID tag with a number or address, contact the owners to reunite them with their family. Also monitor local social media groups operated by animal shelters and rescues, as well as those in communities – posters do a great job keeping folks informed about pets that are lost or are found!
