MVPN training offered to volunteers seeking to help veteran, military community

by Staff reports

A basic certification training for military cultural competency will be offered at 9 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 16, at the Rusk Lions Club headquarters on U.S. Highway 84 West in Rusk.

“We’re encouraging members of the public, as well as veterans, to come learn about a referral program that benefits our community by helping us to better meet the needs of veterans and other service members,” said Lions Club member Vic Whadford.

Bradley Erickson – the Military Veteran Peer Network/TVC Certified Peer Service Coordinator for ACCESS, which serves Cherokee County – will lead the training.

“The intent of the basic training is to orient peer volunteers with the very basic fundamentals of per support and MVPN peer volunteer expectations,” he said. “This training also establishes a basic understanding of military service and the many challenges that service members, veterans and their families are faced with.”

While participants may sign up the day of the training, they are encouraged to register early by contacting Erickson at 903-721-2078 or email [email protected] or [email protected].
