Delving into the past
An Oct. 24 “Cedar Hill Cemetery Walk through History” drew approximately 50 people who delved into the past as re-enactors told the stories of some of the people buried in the Rusk cemetery. Cherokee County Judge Chris Davis, known for his love of history and genealogy, remarked that “cemeteries are just strange, wonderful places (where) when you walk by one of these old granite or marble stones, you can’t help but when you see a name, memories will pop into your head.” Those interred in graveyards “come to life with memories we share of them … which is what makes this more than just a field of stones; it’s a field of memories,” Davis said. “And I think sometimes we get so busy in our regular lives that we forget the importance of these places where we put our honored dead. When we don’t take care of our cemeteries, then we lose something special.”
