Canning series planned this month in Rusk

Staff reports

CHEROKEE COUNTY – A free three-day series, held at 6 p.m. weekly on Wednesdays beginning Oct. 12, focuses on different aspects of canning and is geared toward beginners.

Held at the Cherokee County Annex conference room, 165 E. 6th St. in Rusk, topics of basic canning, hot water bath and pressure canning will be addressed Oct. 12, Oct. 19 and Oct. 26 by presenter Brenda Sheridan, a member of the Cherokee County Master Gardeners.

“People have been calling the extension office, asking for this,” said county AgriLife Extension FCH agent Amy Walley of the free series.

“It’s good for young adults, for beginners – it can also be a refresher course for folks. It’s for anybody who is interested, really,” Walley said.

The series is designed to help folks stretch their food budgets, she added.

“It’s not just for garden produce,” Walley said. “If you find a sale at the store, you can take advantage of it and make that food last, while making that dollar stretch.”

RSVP to Cherokee County AgriLife Extension, 903-683-5416.
