Cherokee County resident Shelley Cleaver – best known for his stories about local history – and author Lurlene Bowden have once again teamed up to produce “Pistol Packing Mama,” the fourth volume of their Lonestar Lickskillet Cookbook series. Cleaver said Bowden – who also created covers for the cookbooks – “has inspired me all these years” to share the county’s history along with family recipes. “That recipe for chow-chow, my mama used to make that and we would put it on peas,” he said. “The government used to pay you per acre to raise the peas … so many things have happened in my lifetime, that nobody remembers, so we decided to put them in the cookbook.” “Pistol Packing Mama,” a limited edition first print, is $30 and can be purchased by calling Cleaver at 903-583-4311.
