A Cherokee County man is in custody after warding off law enforcement agents for four hours Wednesday, Sept. 22, according to officials.

Mark Duran, age unknown, was arrested on charges of assault/family violence with a deadly weapon and felon in possession of a firearm, said Cherokee County Sheriff Brent Dickson.

Deputies were dispatched to a residence on County Road 1207 at approximately 3 p.m. Wednesday to serve a warrant, but upon their arrival, Duran barricaded himself inside his residence, Dickson said.

Attempts to extract Duran from the residence were unsuccessful; the Nacogdoches County SWAT team was at the site to assist, he said.

“He would not give himself up; eventually, the SWAT team made entry to take him into custody,” with the stand-off ending at about 7 p.m. Wednesday, the sheriff said.

The warrants were issued by 369th Judicial District Judge Michael Davis.

Duran sustained minor injuries – self-inflicted wounds from “breaking windows and tearing up things,” Dickson said, adding that no one else was in the residence with Duran.
