Heat advisory in effect
CHEROKEE COUNTY – A heat advisory is in effect from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 9, parts of East Texas and surrounding areas, according to National Weather Service officials.
“Hot and humid conditions across the area today will allow for heat index values to exceed 105 degrees. A Heat Advisory is in effect for the entire area for this afternoon,” officials said. “A few thunderstorms will be also possible this afternoon during peak heating hours, mainly across the lakes region of east Tex-as as well as west-central Louisiana.”
Meanwhile, these conditions are expected to continue throughout the region the rest of the week, with high temperatures predicted in the mid- to upper 90s, combined with the increased humidity will allow heat index values to climb between 105 to 110 degrees through much of this week, NWS said.
Heat safety precautions should be taken outdoors to prevent heat stress and heat-related illnesses.
“Hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat illnesses to occur, particularly for those working or participating in outdoor activities,” officials said, reminding people to:
• Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors. Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circum-stances.
“Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When possible reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat
stroke. Wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing when possible. To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shad-ed or air-conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded lo-cation,” officials said. “Heat stroke is an emergency.”
