JUNE

Raffle drawing for a G Force 12 gauge, new in box. Comes with two 5 round clips, a 20-round drum and a lifetime replacement guarantee. Tickets are $10 each. Proceeds will go to help J. R. Jones who was injured in a tractor accident. Drawing to be held at the Trading Post in Maydelle on July 4th at 5 p.m. Need not be present to win. Winner must be eligible to pass a background test and pick up from The Gun Room in Jacksonville.

During the month of June, the Cameron – J. Jarvis Troup Municipal Library, located in downtown Troup, will host “Grill Friends: Get the Facts” Tuesdays, from 11 a.m. to noon. The series is sponsored by Texas A&M AgriLife Extension of Smith County. To learn more, call 903-842-3101.

A one-day Vacation Bible School for youths ages four years to sixth grade will be held Saturday, June 26, at Calvary Baptist Church, 122 Tena St. in Jacksonville. “Running for the Prize” begins with 9:30 a.m. registration, followed by VBS at 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., then a family celebration at 5:30 p.m. Lunch and snacks provided.

JUNE 27

Earle's Chapel is preparing for its annual Homecoming celebration planned for June 27. We will be honoring those who have been buried at Earle's Chapel in the past two years. Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 1515 South Loop 256 in Palestine, will celebrate the fifth Sunday of Pentecost on June 27. Sunday school begins at 9 a.m., followed by Divine Service of Holy Communion at 10:15 a.m.

JULY 2

Legacy at Jacksonville, 810 Bellaire, will host an Independence Day Celebration with live music, barbecue and bounce house, from noon to 2 p.m. Friday, July 2. To learn more, call 903-282-1271.

Southern Gospel musician Michael Knight will perform live as part of the Rusk KOA Holiday Friday Night Concert Series, from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, July 2. Tickets are $10 per person at the door. The KOA is located at 745 FM 313 East in Rusk.

JULY 2-3

The Texas Hobo Cook-off & Gypsy Jamboree at Rusk KOA Holiday, 745 FM 343 in Rusk has been cancelled due to lack of entrants. The event may be rescheduled at a later date.

JULY 3

The Cherokee County Conservative Club (previously the Republican Club) will host its annual Independence Day party and cookout, at noon Saturday, July 3, at Love’s Lookout, north of Jacksonville on U.S. Highway 69. Don Huffines candidate for Texas Governor will be guest speaker. The club will furnish the meat and ask members and guests to bring the side dishes, and a chair. The public is invited.

Lake Striker Resort will host an Independence Day celebration, Saturday, July 3, at 18560 County Road 4256 South in Reklaw. Two outdoor concerts are planned, fireworks with food and merchandise vendors on hand. Gates open at 5:00 p.m. Tickets are $10 per person, with those 12 and younger entering free; tickets are available at the resort’s restaurant, bait store and at StubWire.com.

The Lake Striker Homeowners Association will host a boat parade Saturday, July 3, with 7:30 p.m. sign up at the Lake Striker Resort pier, followed by the parade from 8 to 9 p.m.

JULY 10

Registration for the Jacksonville Tribe Youth Sports program kicks off Saturday, July 10, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at Bowens Temple Church, 308 N. Bolton St. in Jacksonville for the following age groups: Flag, ages 4 to 6, $85 fee; freshmen, ages 7 and 8, $150; sophomore, ages 9 and 10, $150; junior, ages 11 and 12, $150. Participants must provide a birth certificate, a recent photo and a physical form/wellness check. Practice begins July 26, with time and location to be announced. The Military Veteran Peer Network Cherokee and Anderson County will host a July 16 drawing for a Ruger Max 9, with tickets sold through July 15, at Cherokee Parcel Post and For the Love of Nutrition, both in downtown Rusk. A school supply drive for Alto ISD students will be held from noon to 3 p.m., Saturday, July 17, at the Booker T. Washington Community Center.

The Rusk Public Library will host its annual summer reading program – themed “Tales and Tails” for the 2021 event – every Tuesday from 10:45 to 11:45 a.m., June 8 to July 27, with events at various locations throughout the city. To learn more, contact library staff at 903-683-5916.

JULY 27-28

Cherokee Civic Theatre will hold auditions for the play “Little Women,” and are seeking to fill three male roles and 11 female roles, ages 13 and older. Auditions will be held at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday, July 27-28, at the 157 W. 5th St. theatre. The play’s script is an adaptation by Scott Davidson from the classic novel by Louisa May Alcott, and is a condensed version of the original story line.

JULY 31

Spend a day with Santa at the Rusk KOA Holiday, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, July 31. Visitors can enjoy a meal, pose for pictures, swim and ride pedal cars.
