Efforts are underway to ensure food supplies are plentiful in Cherokee County, while an area veterinarian has started offering free food as part of a monthly Pet Food Bank.

The HOPE Center of Jacksonville will host a "Souper Bowl of Caring," Jan. 31 to Feb. 7, inviting folks to get involved in a variety of ways – such as conducting a food drive, volunteering, donating pre-packaged foods or funds – as part of a nationwide grassroots movement. Meanwhile, Rusk KOA Holiday, 745 FM 343 East in Rusk, recently established a permanent drop-off non-perishable food locations, with collected foods donated to The Good Samaritan in Rusk.

Both entities offer food programs that target those in need, as does the Alto Food Pantry and The Chaparral Center, 176 W. San Antonio St. in Alto. The Clothes Closet and More, 314 S. Main in Jacksonville, offers a weekend brown bag ministry.

The newest feeding program focuses on pets, as Dehart Veterinary Service has begun a monthly dog and cat food pantry.

The pet food bank is open from 4:30 to 6 p.m., the third Saturday of each month at 760 N. Main St. in Reklaw, the site of The Haystack restaurant.

Distribution is limited to 50 pounds of food per person and is offered on a first-come, first-serve basis; no brand preferences will be accommodated.

Organizers said there are no residency restrictions. To learn more, contact Dehart Veterinary Service at 903-590-7722.
