Recently, Rusk’s VFW and Auxiliary honored the winners of the annual Voice of Democracy (VOD) and Patriot’s Pen contests. The winner of the VOD contest was Da’Marion Greenwood, a junior at Rusk High School. The winner of the Patriot’s Pen contest was Kara Wofford, a sixth grader at Rusk Junior High. Voice of Democracy and Patriots Pen are programs sponsored by the VFW to encourage young students to think and articulate essays stimulated by an annual patriotic theme furnished by the VFW. The VOD theme this year was “My Vision for America.” The Patriot’s Pen essay was a 300-400 word essay on a patriotic theme chosen by the VFW commander-in-chief. Pictured with both winners is Post Commander Emerson Griffin.
