Habitat for Humanity of Smith County Receives

$250,000 Grant to Assist Veterans with Critical Repairs

(Aug. 20, 2020) TYLER, Texas – Habitat for Humanity of Smith County has received a $250,000 grant from the Texas Veterans Commission Fund for Veterans’ Assistance.

The Texas Veterans Commission grant will be used to provide critical home repairs for 30 veterans and surviving spouses. Renovations will assist veterans in making their homes accessible, healthy and safe. Critical home repairs including new roofs, plumbing, foundation cracks, unstable floors, energy efficient doors and windows, hot water tanks, HVAC and more.

Any veteran or surviving spouse in need of critical home repair and/or modification and who lives in the counties of Anderson, Cherokee, Henderson, Rusk, Smith, Van Zandt, or Wood is eligible to apply. Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit organization that makes homeownership possible for low-income working families. The Smith County affiliate was formed in 1989. In the past 30 years, HFHSC has partnered with local volunteers and donors to build 111 homes. Through its home repair program, Habitat has completed more than 900 critical repair projects, making it possible for veterans, seniors, and people with disabilities to remain safely in their homes. The Fund for Veterans’ Assistance grant program was established by the 80th Legislature. The program awards reimbursement grants in four categories: General Assistance, Housing4TexasHeroes, Veterans Mental Health, and Veterans Treatment Court Grants. These grants offer funding to non-profit and local government organizations which, in turn, provide direct services to Texas Veterans and their families. Since 2009, over $90 million has been awarded to organizations across Texas to help over 250,000 Veterans and their families.
