Dr. Charles Breithaupt, executive director of the University Interscholastic League, on Thursday, March 26, posted a video message reassuring people that he understands the concerns regarding the “lack of opportunity to compete this spring.”

He further stated the staff is doing all possible so that “as soon as schools resume, we’ll continue the UIL competitions for the 2020 school year.”

UIL officials suspended all sports and academic competitions and meets on Monday, March 16, to help curtail the spread of the Coronavirus (COVID-19).

A press release dated Thursday, March 19 stated, “At this time, the earliest games and contests may resume is Monday, May 4.”

There has been no change in date posted since.

In the meantime, the Cherokeean Herald newspaper will spotlight local agriculture and outdoors features and news, in lieu of its regular local sports coverage.

“Thank you for your patience and understanding during this difficult time,” Publisher Josie Fox said.
