Lady Jackets go 1-1 for week

The Alto Lady Jackets were finally able to play their first home game of the season when they took on Mt. Enterprise Tuesday, Jan. 21. The team christened the court with a 62-38 win over the Galcats.

Maquela Jackson led team scoring with 31 points and recorded seven rebounds and two steals.

Mya Tyra sank 19 points and posted two rebounds, two assists and six steals. Areli Perez dropped in eight points, had two assists and captured nine boards.

Makayla Black and Abbie Teutsch added two points each and recorded three rebounds apiece. Black also posted five assists and three steals. Mary Woodard seized five boards and posted two steals.

As a result of the loss to the Douglass Lady Indians Friday, Jan. 24, Alto held a 2-3 district record and a 17-13 record overall. The Lady Jackets are currently third in district behind Douglass and Cushing but will seek to improve their standing this week as they were to play New Summerfield Tuesday, Jan. 28, and will host Cushing Friday, Jan. 31.

Alto Yellowjackets win one, lose one

The Yellowjackets suffered a seven-point loss to the Mt. Enterprise Wildcats, 64-57, Tuesday, Jan. 21.

Alto earned the early lead, 14-8, at the end of the first quarter, which they expanded to 33-22 by the halftime break. The Wildcats mounted a comeback in the second half, outscoring the Jackets 20-14 in the third period to close the gap to a five-point deficit, 47-42. With Mt. Enterprise sinking 22 points in the final frame to Alto’s 10, the Wildcats were able to overtake the Jackets for the win.

High scorer for Alto was Skyler Atkins with 20 points, followed by Keithen Jenkins with 12 and KurrinSai Jackson with 10. Jay Pope dropped in nine points. Jerrion Skinner, Jackson Duplichain and Landon Cook added two points each.

The Jackets earned a win over the Douglass Indians, 65-59, Friday, Jan. 24. Taking the early lead again, the Jackets were up by six points at the end of the first period, 22-16. The Indians earned two more points than the Jackets in the second quarter, but Alto held their advantage at the half, 31-27. With a 19-12 margin in the third frame, Alto increased the deficit by a score of 50-39. Allowing the Indians a five point advantage in the final quarter, 20-15, Alto still maintained the lead and took the win.

Pope was lead scorer with 14 points, immediately followed by Atkins with 13 and Jenkins with 12. Duplichain sank 10 points and Jackson dropped in nine. Skinner added five points to the team total and Clayton Terry, two.

Alto carried a 1-2 district record (8-16, overall) into this week. The team was to compete against New Summerfield Tuesday, Jan. 28, and will host Cushing Friday, Jan. 31.

Troup defeats Winona

The Troup Tigers hosted Winona, taking a 50-47 win over the Wildcats on Friday, Jan. 24. The first period ended with just a two-point deficit for Troup, 12-10, but the Tigers were down 12 points at the half, 27-15. Intensifying their play, the Tigers put 15 points on the scoreboard in the third frame to Winona’s six, bringing Troup to within three points of the Wildcats, 33-30. Outscoring the Wildcats 20-14 in the final quarter was enough for the Tigers to overtake their opponent and earn the win.

Bracey Cover led team scoring with 17 points, including five three-point shots. Grayson Driggs dropped in 14 points, including three treys. Kedrick Frazier sank nine points, including a three-pointer. Clayton Vickers and Matthew Castillo each put four points on the board. Easton Haugeberg added two points.

Troup carried a 5-2 district record, 20-18 overall, into their game Tuesday against Gladewater. The team will travel to Sabine Friday, Jan. 31, where both JV and varsity teams will play. Tipoffs are at 5 and 7:30 p.m., respectively.
