The Rusk Police Department will see a familiar face holding the reigns while it looks for a new chief of police.

RPD Detective Stephen Hughes will step in as interim police chief after the first week of February when current Chief Joe Williams takes over as Jacksonville police chief. Sergeant Nathan Acker will step in as interim detective while Hughes is acting chief.

“I have every confidence in Stephen stepping in and making sure we continue to keep the pace we’ve managed to set over the last three years and continue diligently moving forward,” City Manager Jim Dunaway said. “We certainly wish Joe all the best in Jacksonville – they’re very lucky to get him.”

Williams served at RPD chief for nearly three years. His last day with the Rusk department will be Friday, Feb. 7. Hughes has been with RPD for 20 years, first as a patrol officer, before working his way up to detective.

Dunaway said he anticipates starting the search for a new chief within the next two weeks.

Dunaway also advised the position will be advertised statewide through the Texas Municipal League, for at least 90 days.

“We hope to have someone in place by at least May,” Dunaway said.

“I am looking forward to serving as interim chief and continuing to provide professional police services to the citizens of Rusk,” said Detective Hughes.
