The Jacksonville City Council met in a special-called executive session, held throughout the day on Monday, Jan. 6, to discuss who should become the city’s next chief of police.

Jacksonville City Manager Greg Smith reported approximately two dozen applications for the position had been received since the position was posted. Council members had narrowed the decision down to four candidates by Monday evening.

Acting Chief Mike Alexander was named interim Police Chief Tuesday, Sept. 10, following the departure of former Chief Andrew Hawkins, who left the department to take a position as chief of police in Sunnyvale.

City officials said an announcement regarding the Jacksonville chief of police is expected by the end of this week.

The regular monthly Jacksonville City Council meeting will be at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 14, at Jacksonville City Hall, 315 S. Ragsdale St., Jacksonville.

The public is welcome.
