Wells Volunteer Fire Department and Wells Economic Development Corporation are officially kicking off Cherokee County’s Christmas festivities.

The city’s annual Christmas Lighting of the Tree ceremony will be held at 5 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 30, at the Wells City Park, next to the Wells fire department, 159 Homer Road, Wells.

“We invite everyone to come out and help us get the Christmas season officially started,” Wells City Secretary Melonie Pounds said.

The tree will be lit at full dark.

“Santa’s going to ride in on a fire truck and light the tree for us,” Wells VFD Chief Robert Kalka said. “Then he’ll stick around for pictures with the kids. It’s always a fun time and a great way to fellowship with your neighbors and community members.”

Hot cocoa and other refreshments will be available. Area churches will also participate in the ceremony.

This is the county’s first community Christmas event for 2019.

Other municipalities, churches and civic organizations also have various holiday events, including parades, pancake suppers and parties, planned as well. See the Cherokeean Herald’s annual parade pages on pages B4-B5 in this issue for details on the annual parades scheduled in Rusk and Jacksonville.
