Friday night gridiron recap

BROOK HILL

The Brook Hill Guard blanked Coram Deo Academy in Flower Mound, 49-0.

Garrett Esposito completed 12 of 21 pass attempts for 206 yards and three touchdowns. Seth Moss was the go-to receiver, hauling in five passes for 92 yards and all three passing touchdowns; 19, 18 and 38 yards. Carson Richards caught four aerials for 72 yards. Jake Shaffer and TyJuan Cannon caught two tosses each, for 25 and 20 yards respectively.

Fisher Bass picked up 64 yards on three carries. Fifty yards were accumulated by Lane Barter on his three carries, including a 21-yard touchdown run. Jaylon Caldwell churned out 56 yards on 12 carries, including a two-yard rushing touchdown. Casper Engqvist ran the ball twice for 45 yards. Esposito carried the ball three times for 16 yards and two touchdowns.

Jake Shaffer led in tackles with a total of seven. Moss followed with five. David Roberts, Valdemar Henriksen and Bass each added four tackles. Nico Flores also posted four tackles along with an interception. Jakelyn Morgan recorded a tackle and an interception.

Brook Hill (3-1) will travel to Willow Park to take on Trinity Christian (0-5) in their final non-conference game of the season Friday, Oct. 4. The Guard will begin their TAPPS II-2 slate at home Oct. 11 against Dallas Christian (5-0).

BULLARD

Bullard traveled to Athens where they suffered a close loss to the Hornets in the waning minutes of the game, 42-35.

The Panthers accumulated 326 offensive yards, 85 yards passing and 241 yards rushing, on 56 plays.

Tristen Shewmake completed 10 of 22 pass attempts for a 45 percent completion rate. Christian Johnson caught two passes for 18 yards. Nic Hooley collected 18 yards on three catches. A single aerial to Grant Walters resulted in a 26-yard touchdown. Jaxson Elliott’s single catch of five yards also resulted in a touchdown.

Shewmake rushed 18 times for 160 yards and a touchdown. Bryson Luscombe acquired 67 yards on 11 carries. Landon Wheeler picked up 13 yards and a touchdown on three carries.

Although the Panthers were in the lead until the end of the third quarter, when the score was tied at 35-all, Athens managed a final touchdown in the fourth period. With a successful point-after kick, Athens took the win 42-35.

Bullard will host Gilmer Friday, Oct. 4, in the final non-conference game of the season.

The Panthers (14) are currently second in District 7-4A, just behind Wills Point (2-3). Others teams in the district are Brownsboro (1-4), Canton (1-4) and Rusk (0-5). Bullard (1-4) will travel to Wills Point (2-3) to open the District 7-4A slate Friday, Oct. 11.

TROUP

The Troup Tigers fell to the Grand Saline Indians in their first conference game of the season, 26-29.

Jordan Elliott completed 18 of 27 pass attempts for a 66 percent completion rate, 260 yards and two touchdowns. Desmon Deason caught nine passes for 79 yards and a touchdown. Jaden Lewis received seven passes for 161 yards and a touchdown. Anthony Salgado caught a single 14-yard pass.

Elliott advanced the ball 86 yards on 12 carries and scored a touchdown. Daniel Leon accumulated 36 yards on five carries, crossing the goal line once.

Neither team scored during the first quarter, but Troup found themselves in a 7-14 deficit at the halftime break. By the end of the third period, Troup had rallied to drive past the Indians, 20-16. Unfortunately for Troup, the Tigers were outscored 13-6 in the final frame for a 26-29 loss.

The Tigers (1-3, 0-1) will try to improve their record when they travel to Harmony (1-3, 1-0) to take on the Eagles Friday, Oct. 4.
