Tribe tennis wins again
The Jacksonville varsity tennis team went on the road and slammed John Tyler 15-4 when the met Tuesday, Sept. 3.
This nets the team its second district victory of the season.
Boys singles winning in two sets were Alex Hassell (6-3, 6-3) and Carlos Comacho (6-2, 6-1). Those winning in tie-breaking games were Casey Coughin (2-6, 6-3, [10-5]), Will Royon (7-6, 4-6, [10-8]) and Tavis Dosser (6-3, 6-7, [10-8]). Saul Martinez came close to victory in a tie-breaker, but lost the final game by the close score of 9-11.
Girls winning in singles play were Katlin Gonzalez (6-2, 6-2), Lizbet Saldana (3-6, 4-6, [10-5]), Haley George (7-6, 6-4), Alejandra Hernandez (7-5, 6-4) and Isabelle Maiquez (3-6, 6-2, [10-8]).
In boys’ doubles, the duo of Martinez and Hassell bested their opponents, 6-4, 6-1.
In girls’ doubles, each of the teams won their respective matches including Gonzalez and Hernandez (6-3, 6-2), Saldana and George (6-3, 6-4) and Maiquez and Molly Bentoski (7-5, 6-2).
The mixed doubles team of Bianka Cornejo and Sergio Rivera also netted a win, 7-5, 6-2.
The Tribe was scheduled to host non-conference meets against Wills Point (8 a.m.) and Center (1:30 p.m.) on Saturday, Sept. 7.
The team was to host Hallsville is district competition beginning at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 10. The Tribe will host Nacogdoches beginning at 4 p.m. next Tuesday, Sept. 17.
The team now has a 6-2 overall record and is 2-0 in district.
