Tribe tennis hits winning streak

The Jacksonville tennis team hosted Bullard Monday, Aug. 12, defeating the Panthers 14-5.

All three Jacksonville boys doubles teams beat their Wildcat opponents and they included Saul Martinez and Alex Hassell (4-1, 4-1), Carlos Camacho and Casey Coughlin (4-1, 4-0) and Will Royon and Tavis Dosser, (4-0, 3-5, [11-9]).

In girls doubles, teams finding victory were Haley George and Isabelle Maquez (4-1, 4-1) and Laura Little and Molly Bentoski, (4-2, 2-4, [10-6]).
Bianka Cornejo and Sergio Rivera participated as a mixed doubles team, netting a win, 4-1, 4-2.

In boys singles, victory for Jacksonville players was earned by Martinez (1-4, 4-1, [10-4]), Hassell (4-1, 4-1), Camacho (4-0, 4-1), Royon (4-0, 4-0) and Rivera (4-0, 4-1). In exhibition games, Dosser and Blakeney each won, 6-0.

In singles play for the girls, those winning their sets included Hernandez (5-3, 4-1), Carnejo (4-0, 4-2) and Little (4-1, 0-2 [retired]).

Participating in the Whitehouse tournament, Jacksonville downed both Longview (14-5) and Forney (16-3).

The duo of Martinez and Hassell took wins over Longview (8-2) and Forney (9-7) as did Rivera and Coughlin (8-1, 8-4) and Royon and Dosser (8-2, 8-5).

Gonzalez and Hernandez defeated both schools (9-8, Longview; 8-2 Forney) in doubles play. Saldana and George downed Longview (8-3), but lost to Forney (4-8). Maiquez and Comejo also had mixed results, beating Longview (8-4), but falling to Forney (3-8).

The mixed doubles team Bentoski and Blakeney lost to Longview (3-8) but the mixed duo of Bentoski and Royon defeated Forney (8-4).

In boys singles, players netting victories over both teams included Martinez (8-3, Longview; 8-4, Forney); Hassell (8-4, 8-1), Camacho (8-1, 8-0) Royon (8-4, 8-3) and Rivera (8-5, 8-6). Coughlin beat Longview (8-4), but fell to Forney (4-8).

In girls singles, players earning wins against both teams were Gonzalez (8-1, Longview; 8-1, Forney), George (8-5, 8-2) and Cornejo (8-6, 8-6). Lizbet Saldana lost to Longview (3-8), but followed the loss with a win over Forney (8-2). Two other ladies dropped games against Longview, but defeated Forney. They were Hernandez (4-8, 8-7) and Maiquez (4-6, 8-6).

The next meet for Tribe tennis is scheduled for 4 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 27, when they host Marshall, their first district opponent.
