Memorial Day closings announced

Memorial Day, observed on the last Monday in May, falls on May 27 this year.

The holiday is set aside to honor the men and women who have died while serving in the United States Armed forces.

Post offices and banks will be closed for the federal holiday, as will several city and county offices.

The Cherokeean Herald offices will be closed during regular business hours on Monday, and will reopen at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday.

The Alto, Bullard, Jacksonville, New Summerfield, Rusk and Troup ISDs will be closed in observance of Memorial Day. The holiday will not affect Wells ISD as their last scheduled day of the year is Thursday, May 23.

Cherokee County offices, including the sheriff’s office, will close on Memorial Day. For emergencies, call 9-1-1.

The city offices of Alto, Bullard, Jacksonville, New Summerfield, Rusk, Troup and Wells will all close Monday, May 27. Trash pickup services should not be disrupted as neither Republic Services nor AmeriTex close for the Memorial Day holiday.
