Wells gearing up for homecoming with city clean up

by By Cristin Parker cristin@thecherokeean.com

Clean up, clean up, everybody living in Wells.

Wells residents are invited to show their pride in their community during the city’s spring clean-up, Saturday, March 16, and Sunday, March 17.

Dumpsters will be delivered Friday, March 15, behind Wells City Hall at the Depot parking area.

Most items will be accepted, including empty paint cans, as long as the paint has been dried (mix kitty litter into the paint to dry it).

These items will not be accepted:

• liquids of any type (gas, paint, oil, antifreeze, Freon, etc.);

• oil filters;

• tires;

• barrels; and

• anything containing cfcs, including refrigerators/air conditioners (unless certified all of the Freon is drained).

For more information about the cleanup, you may contact City Hall at (936) 867-4615.

Homecoming festivities kick off at 9 a.m., Saturday, April 6, with a reception at the Wells High School. This year’s theme is Around the World… Adventure Awaits.

Activities will be featured around town from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Vendor booth spaces are still available.

"We’ve already got a wide variety of booths signed up – everything from handmade crafts to plants to essential oils to apparel to health checks. And there’s still plenty of space for anyone interested in participating,” event volunteer Rhonda Clover said. “We were totally packed last year, until the weather didn’t cooperate – so we’re praying for a good, sunny day this year so we can expand and improve on last year’s participation.”

Clover said booth space is free and the event will not feature food vendors because the Homecoming Queen candidates sell concessions as one of their main fundraisers.

“We don’t want to take away from them,” Clover said.

Contact Clover, (936) 240-4796 to reserve booth space.

Rube Sessions Library will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and will offer refreshments.

Class of 1999’s reunion will be held at the school, 10-11 a.m.

A parade through downtown Wells will start at 2 p.m. Anyone interested in participating in the parade can contact the Wells ISD Administration Office, (936) 867-4466, to receive a registration form.

The Wells Homecoming Association will serve a fish supper, 5-6:30 p.m., at the school cafeteria.

Plates are $7 and include fried catfish, fries, coleslaw, hushpuppies, dessert and tea. Proceeds benefit various projects.

At 7 p.m., a program honoring the class of 1999, recognizing the class of 1969 and crowning the 2019 Homecoming Queen will be held at the WISD auditorium.
