A former Cherokee County deputy has been charged with indecency with a child.

Jonathan Bryan Shobert, 46, of Jacksonville, was arrested by the Texas Rangers and arraigned Tuesday, Feb. 12, on the second degree felony, which reportedly occurred Jan. 26.

Shobert had been employed as a sergeant with the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office.

“At the request of the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office, Texas Rangers were asked to conduct an investigation,” Texas Department of Public Safety Media liaison Jean Dark said in a statement provided to the Cherokeean Herald last week. “Mr. Shobert was booked into the Cherokee County Jail without incident.

“The investigation is ongoing and no other information will be released at this time.”

Texas Ranger Nicholas Castle investigated the incident. The warrant for Shobert’s arrest was issued by the Cherokee County Second District Court.

County jail officials report Shobert was released from the Cherokee County Jail on a bond of $50,000,

According to court documents, as part of the condition of bail, Shobert is prohibited from coming within 200 feet of the alleged victim and is not allowed to

- have any communication, either direct or indirect, with the alleged victim or alleged victim’s family in a threatening or harassing manner;

- be in the area of the alleged victim’s residence or place of employment; or

- go near any child care facility, residence or school where the alleged victim normally resides or attends.

Violations of any of these stipulations is punishable by a fine of up to $100 and/or up to three days in jail.

“A person who violates this order may also be punished by the revocation or increase of … bail and be subject to confinement until the conclusion of this case,” court documents state.

Court papers also indicate Shobert had not requested a court-appointed attorney.

Cherokee County Precinct 1 Justice of the Peace Judge Brenda Dominy signed the arrest warrant.
