Area teams continue to hoop it up as they go into district play.

Jacksonville

Indians, Maidens claim victory over Whitehouse Wildcats

The Jacksonville Indians beat Whitehouse, 60-35, when they hosted the Wildcats Tuesday, Jan. 8.

The Jacksonville Maidens also defeated rival Whitehouse, 31-19.

As a team, the Maidens brought down 46 rebounds and had seven assists. They stole the ball nine times and blocked three shots.

Both Indians and Maidens were scheduled to be on the road Tuesday, Jan. 15, facing the John Tyler Lions and will host the Hallsville Bobcats Friday, Jan. 18.

Rusk

Eagles fall to Mustangs

The Eagles lost their first District 19-4A contest to the Madisonville Mustangs, 55-46, on Friday, Jan. 11.

High scorer for the team was Colton Killingsworth with 13 points, four of which were three-pointers. Clayton Hall and Dredon Sessions each sank seven points and Marcos Torres dropped in five.

Lady Eagles defeat Madisonville

The Lady Eagles defeated the Mustangs, 48-40, when they visited Madisonville Friday, Jan. 11.

Both teams had a bye Tuesday, Jan. 15, but are scheduled to host the Palestine Wildcats Friday, Jan. 18.

Alto

Bison trample Yellowjackets

Last week the Alto Yellowjackets were overcome by the Buffalo Bison, 29-60.

The first quarter ended in just a two-point difference, though Buffalo held the 14-12 lead. The second quarter belonged to the Bison who outscored Alto 20-8 in the period. The third and fourth frames were closer in points, 4-11 and 5-15 respectively, but it was far too little for Alto to conquer Buffalo.

The Yellowjackets visited Gary for the first district game Friday, Jan. 11, losing to the Bobcats in a close 45-49 match.

Alto outscored Gary 18-9 in the first quarter, but allowed 17 points to their own 10 in the second period. The halftime score was 28-26, but the Yellowjackets had the lead. The Bobcats came back in the third frame, shooting nine points to Alto’s one, giving Gary the 35-29 lead. With only two points over the Bobcats in the final period, 16-14, the Yellowjackets couldn’t complete the comeback, losing 45-49.

Yellowjacket high scorer was Fred Thacker with 18 points followed by Skyler Atkins with 10. Jay Pope and Bubba Mumphrey each sank six points. Will Dixon dropped in three points, Kurrinsai Jackson, two, and Keithen Jenkins added one.

Lady Jackets fall to Bearkats

The Lady Jackets hosted Cushing Tuesday, Jan. 8, and lost to the Bearkats, 25-32.

Both the Yellowjackets and Lady Jackets were set to visit Mt. Enterprise Tuesday, Jan. 15, and will travel to Douglass Friday, Jan. 18.

New Summerfield

Hornets begin district play with win

over Douglass

The New Summerfield Hornets opened league play by hosting the Douglass Indians Friday, Jan. 11. With a 47-37 victory, the Hornets now stand 1-0 in District 21-2A and 18-4 overall.

Collin Wilkerson was lead scorer with 24 points including a three-point shot. Elvis Mendoza scored eight points for the night, including two from three-point distance. Bryant Leon dropped in a three-pointer and a total of six points. Alfredo sank four points, Luis Martinez hit a three-point shot and Julio Parra added two points.

Lady Hornets felt the sting from

Mt. Enterprise

The Lady Hornets fell to Mt. Enterprise, 29-35, Tuesday, Jan. 8. The defeat dropped their district win-loss record to 1-1.

Both teams were slated to host the Gary Bobcats (15-8) Tuesday, Jan. 15, and travel to Cushing to tip-off against the Bearkats Friday, Jan. 18.

Troup

Tigers remain undefeated in district play

The Troup Tigers defeated the Eagles 46-31 when they traveled to Harmony Tuesday, Jan. 8. The win gave Troup a 4-0 district record and a 13-3 overall standing.

The Tigers were ahead at the half by a 16-7 margin. In the third quarter, Troup allowed Harmony to outscore them by two points, though it barely cut into the Tigers’ lead. The score at the end of the period was 25-19 in Troup’s favor. The Tigers sank 21 points in the fourth frame while allowing the Eagles only 12 points and taking the 46-31 victory.

Quincy Kincade was high scorer with 15 points, all with three-point shots. Kedrick Frazier sank eight points, Grayson Driggs dropped in seven while Kris Johnson added six points. Weslee Ross sank five points. Desmon Deason dropped in three while Blake Wood added two points.

Totals for Frazier, Driggs and Ross each included a three-point shot.

Troup hosted West Rusk Friday, Jan. 11, and garnered another win, taking them to 5-0 in district and 14-3 overall. The final score over the Raiders was a decisive 64-37.

Lead scorer for the Tigers was Ross with 21 points, including two three-pointers. Kincade followed with 18 points, 12 of which came off three-point shots. Frazier hit dropped in 11 points, including a three-point shot. Johnson sank six points and Deason, four. Wood and Cade Jones each added two points.

Lady Tigers fall to 6-0 Harmony Eagles

The Lady Tigers lost to the Harmony Eagles Tuesday, Jan. 8, by a score of 42-52, giving Harmony a perfect 6-0 district record while Troup fell to 4-2.

The first quarter ended in just a two-point deficit for the Tigers, 9-11. By halftime, Harmony had increased their lead to 21-16 over Troup. The Tigers came back in the third quarter outscoring Harmony, 18-10, and taking the 34-31 lead, but the final quarter belonged to the Eagles who took the victory.

Ty Moon was lead scorer with 27 total points, including two three-pointers and 15 of 18, or 83 percent, from the free-throw line. Maryssa Gilliam sank six points and Kori Minnix dropped in five. Maddy Griffin and Julie Herndon each added two points.

Troup hosted West Rusk Friday, Jan. 11, and beat the Raiders 40-19, upping their district record to 5-2.

The Lady tigers took a 15-10 first quarter lead. Preventing any score by the Raiders in the second period, the Tigers expanded the lead to 19-10 at the half. In the third period, Troup outscored West Rusk 13-7, increasing their lead to 32-17. With an 8-2 margin in the final frame, Troup easily defeated the Raiders.

High scorer was Minnix with 25 points. Moon followed with 11 points, including two three-point shots. Herndon and Jessie Minnix each dropped in two points.

The Tigers and Lady Tigers were set to host rival Arp on Tuesday, Jan. 15, and then host Winona Friday, Jan. 18.

Bullard

Lady Panthers 6-0, undefeated in district play

The Lady Panthers hosted Kilgore Friday, Jan. 11, beating the Bulldogs 58-41. The win gives Bullard a perfect 6-0 District 16-4A record.

Bullard won the tip-off and scored the first four points of the game. Kilgore came within a single point during the first quarter, but the Lady Panthers gradually extended their lead ending the period ahead17-11. Bullard continued to increase their lead, resulting in a 32-23 halftime score. Though Kilgore came within five points in the third frame, they never closed the gap and the Lady Panthers took the 58-41 win.

Bullard Panthers and Lady Panthers were to host Henderson Tuesday, Jan. 15, and will travel to Gilmer Friday, Jan. 18.
