The Rusk Eagles were soaring high Friday following their first win of the season and used that momentum to garner a win over the Brownsboro Bears.

The first quarter started off slow with several possession changes due to downs with neither team scoring.

Brownsboro started off the second quarter with a 16-yard touchdown pass followed by a good point after, gaining the first score of the night.

Connor Ellis had a long kickoff return on the next play and moved the ball to the Bear’s 16 yard line, setting it up for Jaylon Hall to cross the plane, securing Rusk’s first touchdown of the night. A good PAT left the scored tied 7-7.

Rusk kicked off to Brownsboro with 10 minutes left in the second quarter. Three plays later, Rusk recovered a Brownsboro fumble on their own 36 yard line.

Despite valid attempts by the Eagles to move the ball down field, possession once again returned to the Bears on downs. On fourth down with five minutes to go in the first half of the game, the Bears once again fumbled with Rusk recovering the ball of their own seven yard line. The Eagles were able to advance to the 22 yard line before turning over the ball on downs.

With two minutes left in the half, the Bears had possession of the ball on the Rusk 44 yard line. In just three plays the Bears were able to move the ball down to the Rusk two yard line. A two yard rushing touchdown on the next play, followed by a good PAT put the Bears in the lead going into halftime with a score of 14-7.

The first part of the third quarter had the ball changing possession several times on downs.

With six minutes left in the quarter, the Eagles were on the Bear’s 17 yard line. After two plays where the ball moved just a few yards, Hall completed a 14-yard rushing touchdown with Jermaine Lewis completing a successful PAT to once again tie the score, 14-14.

The Eagles pulled ahead just a few minutes later with Hall completing a 41-yard touchdown pass to Jeremy Johnson. Lewis completed a successful PAT and brought the score to 21-14.

The final quarter of the game started with the Bears in control of the ball, but that didn’t last long as they punted to Rusk with 11 minutes to go in the quarter.

Rusk moved the ball down field 16 yards over the next several plays. A 33-yard rushing touchdown by Hall, followed by good PAT by Lewis gave the Eagles a two touchdown lead with just nine minutes of game play left.

With less than a minute left in the game, Johnson intercepted a Brownsboro pass, but the clock ran out before the Eagles could complete another play.

This Friday will have the Eagles pitted against the Eagles as Rusk hosts Canton.

Both teams go into Friday night’s match-up with two wins; however, Canton has yet to secure a win during an away game.

The Rusk Eagles, who score the majority of their 27.1 average game points in the first quarter, will need to be on point both offensively and defensively as they take on Canton.

The Canton Eagles score an average of 31.3 points per game and are statistically a second half team.
