Friday night lights continue to burn bright across east Texas as area teams enter their fourth week of regular season ball play.

Both football players and track teams show that running the distance can earn big results while a local volleyball team proves hard work and dedication can earn a first place spot.
Tigers take down Elks

The Troup Tigers traveled to Elkart to take on the Elks Friday night and walked away with 54 points and a game victory.

Once again, Troup showed they can move the ball down the field with a total of 307 rushing yards and 174 receiving yards.

Calob Smith dominated the rushing yards racking up 118 yards and one touchdown, followed by Weslee Ross with a total of 86 yards and three touchdowns.

Of the 174 receiving yards, Jordan Elliott laid claim to 80 yards and one touchdown, earning him the title of offensive player of the week for the Tigers.

Matt Adam and Trent Allen tied for defensive player of the week with Adam completing 13 tackles and Allen turning an interception into a 75 yard touchdown run.

Special teams player of the week went to Jaden Lewis for two tackles on kick offs inside the 20 yard line and he picked up a kick off on the 3 yard line that Elkhart did not recover.

Troup has a bye week this week, but will travel to Grand Saline on Sept. 28.

Guard runs over the

Red Devils

Brook Hill traveled to Huntington on Friday night to play against the Red Devils.

The Guard jumped out in the lead during the first quarter with a 14-7 lead, a lead they would maintain the remainder of the game.

Neither team added any points to the scoreboard in the second quarter, but the Guard proved they were there to play ball during the third quarter by adding an additional 22 points to the board, bringing the score to 36-14.

Brook Hill and Huntington both added an additional six points to the board during the fourth quarter for a final score of 42-20.

Brook Hill will take on TCA Willow Park in their home stadium on Sept. 21.

Rusk Lady Eagles 7th grade team dominates tournament

The Rusk Lady Eagles 7th grade team traveled to Tyler on Saturday, Sept. 15 to play in the Tyler Middle School Invitational Tournament and finished first out of 16 teams.

The Lady Eagles defeated Tyler Foster, Elysian Fields, Bullard and Tyler Three Lakes.

“This team has a lot of potential,” said coach Corinna Ford. “They always play hard and never give up and I could not be more proud of them.

The junior high team boasts a 6-1 record for the season.

Rusk Eagles compete in Golden Eagle Run

The Rusk Eagle boys and girls cross country track teams traveled to Fairfield on Sept. 15 to compete in the Golden Eagle Run.

There were 65 competitors running a total distance of two miles in the varsity girls division with the Lady Eagles team consisting of Jordyn Babyak, who finished in 19th place with a time of 14:54.86; Alyssa Hardy finishing in 31st place with a time of 15:43.77; Zuri Flores coming in 48th place and a time of 16:44.37; Jalisa Swindell earning 53rd place with a time of 18:37.32; Melanie Santos came in 57th place with a time of 19:18.30; and Jasmine Vences in 63rd place with a time of 21:17.42.

There were 73 competitors running a total of three miles in the varsity boys division.

The Eagles team included Marcos Torres who earned the 18th place spot with a time of 19:28.83; Eli Delauga coming in 26th with a time of 20:14.96; Brayden Talmadge in 55th place and a time of 22:35.19; Jonathan Torres earned 63rd place with a final time of 23:51.18; Derek Session in 66th place with a time of 24:53.15 and Damian Mendez in 68th place with a time of 24:57.11.
