It was a weekend dedicated to covering the distance as area teams ran the football into end zones on Friday night and ran cross country on Saturday.

Carlisle Indians defeat Troup Tigers

The Troup Tigers were all about the receiving yards during Friday night’s game against the Carlisle Indians, covering 307 total yards.

Quarterback Weslee Ross was connecting with wide receiver Jaden Lewis, who led the pack with a total of 163 receiving yards and two touchdowns.

Ross also made consistent connections with Brandon Pike, who ended the night with 71 receiving yards and a touchdown.

Despite great efforts and plays by the Tigers, they fell to the Indians with a score of 28-35.

Players of the week for Troup are Weslee Ross, who threw 307 yards and four touchdown passes, Max Hale on defense who completed 19 tackles and Eddie Rojo on special teams for achieving four for four on PAT and two kicks for touchbacks.

Troup will travel to Elkart on Sept. 14 to take on the Elks.

Troup will celebrate Homecoming on Friday, Oct. 12 during a home game against Quitman.

Guard falls to Cardinals

Brook Hill Guard took on the John Paul II Cardinals on their home turf in Bullard Friday night.

The teams were tied at 14-14 at the end of the first quarter, but the Cardinals pulled ahead in the second quarter adding 17 more points to the scoreboard.

Kahlan Griffin contributed to the eight points the Guard added in the second quarter by completing a 77 yard touchdown run.

Fisher Bass followed with a three yard run, scoring a two point conversion.

The Cardinals dominated the third quarter -- again adding 17 points to the board and preventing the Guard for scoring.

The Guard answered back in the fourth quarter with Griffin completing a nine yard touchdown run and keeping the Cardinals from scoring any additional points.

The final game score was 29-48 in favor of the Cardinals.

The Guard will travel to Huntington on Sept. 14 to take on the Red Devils.

Rusk Eagles participate in Tyler Lee Classic Sept. 8

The Rusk Eagle cross country teams traveled to UT Tyler on Saturday to participate in the Tyler Lee Classic cross country meet. The varsity girls running/times were Jordyn Babyak 13:49.6; Alyssa Hardy 15:07.82; Zuri Flores 16:47.42; Jalissa Swindell 17:20.83; and Jasmine Venus 21:15.94.

Running on the varsity boys team were Eli Delauga 20:04.96; Marcos Torres 20:54.8; Wyatt Smallwood 23:07.33; Cameron Blakenship 23:07.48; Derek Session 23:39.75; and Damian Mendez 24:24.30.

Lady Eagles claim victory

in Athens

Both the freshman and varsity Lady Eagles volleyball teams claimed a victory over the Athens Hornets on Sept. 7.

The freshman team came away with a 2-0 win while the varsity team claimed a 3-1 (25-14; 25-14; 20-25; 25-14) victory.

The Lady Eagles will travel to Longview on Sept. 11 to take on the Lobos.
