Each year, Rusk High School juniors in the school’s U.S. History classes construct models of different World War II events that are judged by six teachers, principal Scott Schwartz and last year’s winner. This year, Travis Pepin (pictured) won the contest with his clay model of U.S. Marines raising the American flag atop Mount Suribachi at Iwo Jima. He received $75. Jarrett Basse finished second and received $50 for his display of a Nazi soldier’s desk. Aaron McReight finished third and received $25 for his model of a Japanese internment camp.
