Almost 3,000 photographs of people and places in the Alto and south Cherokee County area are available online. The photograph collection, which began as a sesquicentennial project in 1976 ranges from copies of pre-Civil War tintypes to pictures from the 1950s, 1960s and a few from the 1970s. The photos are stored in a Flickr Photostream, and are indexed by name, as well as being sorted into groups by subject matter. The photostream is made up of copies of pictures from Alto-area citizens, as well as from some Alto school yearbooks, including Booker T. Washington school, and collections donated by Robert Marshall McClure and the James Grammer family. Anyone who is interested in browsing this collection can get instructions for access by e-mailing altolibrary@gmail.com. The above is a picture of the first airplane to land in Alto. The landing was at Fisher's pasture.
