Fire scorches 3,500 acres

Firefighters battled a wall of flames off FM 343 near Rusk on Monday. High winds pushed the fire back and forth across the Angelina River several times before sweeping into Nacogdoches County and Cushing. The wildfire scorched an estimated 3,500 acres and was still burning at press time Tuesday.
