On election night Aug. 19, 1916, a group of officials and interested parties gathered in the Cherokee County Courthouse basement in Rusk. County Treasurer Lettie I. Baker, standing far right, was the first woman elected to county-wide office in Cherokee County. She was elected to the office two years before she could vote in an election. She was re-elected in 1918, but chose to go to Austin and work for State Comptroller O. Smith of Henderson.
