Rev. Barbara Hugghins, First United Methodist Church Minster in Jacksonville, gave a moving tribute recently when she presented a program which showcased Texas poetry and music. She selected the poem, Lasca, by Frank Desprez, an Englishmen who in 1879 travelled to America where, for three years he was a cowboy. In 1882 he returned to England and wrote about Texas. Hugghins recalled she had memorized the poem in school for declamation (a recitation delivered as an exercise in rhetoric or elocution). Her rendition at the Cherokee County Genealogical Society meeting had many in the audience reaching for tissues. Also performing was the Lykins Family trio. They sang and played songs about Texas while eliciting audience participation.
