Clogging is an American dance form that began in the Appalachian Mountains in the mid 1700s. The word "Clog" comes from the Gaelic, and means "time." Clogging is done in time with the music -to the downbeat usually with the heel keeping rhythm. The Cherokee Cloggers organized in 1996 and dancers come from Anderson, Cherokee, Houston, Nacogdoches, Rusk and Smith Counties. They once danced five performances at Six Flags over Texas in a single week-end. They will perform as part of the on-going activities for the 180th Anniversary of Texas Independence--Thursday March 17 at the Rusk Public Library. A Shootout on 6th Street will also be part of the festivities. Event hours are: 4 to 7:30 p.m. (Photo courtesy of Cherokee Clogger leader Peggy Hugghins)
