TSR local appreciation fares in February
      TSR will offer discounted local appreciation fares of $10 per person for regular train excursions for residents of Anderson, Angelina, Cherokee, Freestone, Henderson, Houston, Leon, Nacogdoches, Navarro, Rusk and Smith counties. Rides depart from the Palestine Depot Feb. 6, 13-14, 20 and 27. Upgrades will be available for climate controlled seating.

Republicans meet Feb. 8 at Cherokee County Federal Credit Union
      Members of the Cherokee County Republican Club will meet at 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 8, at the Cherokee County Federal Credit Union, 602 Henderson St. in Rusk. Those attending will have an opportunity to meet candidates for the various positions on the ballot. A total of 23 Republican candidates have officially signed up to run in the state and Cherokee County primary on March 2.

      The Resale Shop operated by the Volunteer Council for the Rusk State Hospital Inc. is open 9 a.m.-1 p.m. at 545 Castner St. in Rusk on the first and second Friday of each month. RHS participates in 1-act play competition
      The Rusk High School theater class will participate in the District one-act play competition March 27 in Carthage. This year’s entry will be “No Fading Star.” Director is Ginger Lustig.

Republican Women’s Club to meet Feb. 9 at Hong Kong Super Buffet in Jacksonville
      The Republican Women’s Club will meet Tuesday, Feb. 9 at Hong Kong Super Buffet, 1644 S Jackson, Jacksonville, from noon to 12:55 p.m. for a dutch treat lunch. Auditions slated for spring production
      The Cherokee Civic Theatre in Rusk will conduct open auditions at 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 6-7 for “Noises Off,” the upcoming spring comedy production. Auditions will be conducted at the theatre, 157 W. 5th Street in Rusk.

Blacksmithing demonstration slated at Mission Tejas State Park
      Basic Blacksmithing will be demonstrated using coal forges and hand operated tools from 9:30 a.m.-2 p.m. Feb. 13 at Mission Tejas State Park. The public is invited to attend and see how this work was done and how some continue to use these methods today.

Beautification committee offers residents free trees
      The Keep Rusk Beautiful Committee and the city of Rusk are offering the chance for area residents to kick this year off green. Ready-to-plant seedlings will be available to everyone, free of charge, on a first-come, first-served basis, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. or while supplies last on Friday, Feb. 5, at the Rusk Civic Center, 555 Euclid St., in Rusk.

David Hendley presents program on pottery making
      David Hendley who has been a potter for more than 30 years was the speaker for the Jan. 28 Lions Club meeting. Mr. Hendley has a master’s degree in ceramics and has demonstrated and lectured at conferences and workshops throughout the country. He is a regular columnist for Clay Times magazine and a past president of the Potter’s Council of the American Ceramic Society.
