TEXAS MAIN STREET PROGRAM APPLICATIONS AVAILABLE ONLINE
           AUSTIN, Texas — The Texas Historical Commission (THC) is now accepting applications from small, urban and recertified communities for participation in the Texas Main Street Program. Applications are available on the THC web site at www.thc.state.tx.us. Completed applications are due by Friday, July 30, 2010.

‘Hide & Seek’ game winner and new icon announced
      Pete Moore of Rusk was the winner in a contest sponsored jointly by the Cherokeean Herald and CD 97.7 FM. In the last issue, he found the heart and Cupid’s arrow in the Flowers by Janae ad and was the correct caller who responded last week during TalkTime at 9:30 a.m. Mr. Moore won a free pizza from Katie’s Pantry in Rusk.

Feb. 3-12
     Wednesday: Beef stroganoff over egg noodles, seasoned cabbage, pickled beets, whole wheat bread, mandarin orange cake, milk. Thursday: Stir fry chicken over rice, egg rolls, fortune cookies, lime pear salad, orange, milk. Friday: Fish veracruz, Spanish rice, squash medley, cornbread, flan, milk.

‘The Diary of Anne Frank’ opens Feb. 11
      “I’m Impressed. This is a great cast,” Camille Jones, producer of “The Diary of Anne Frank” reported to the Cherokee Civic Theatre executive board. She said, “The play is coming along incredibly well.”

Senior Finale sponsors Valentine steak dinner
      The Rusk High School Class of 2010 Senior Finale committee is sponsoring a $10,000 steak dinner event and Valentine celebration at 6 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 13, at Rusk High School cafeteria. Drawing for prizes will begin at 6:30 p.m.

AARP provides residents with free tax preparation aid
      For two days in March, representatives from the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) will be setting up shop inside the Jacksonville Public Library to provide local residents with free tax preparation aid. The assistance is catered mostly towards taxpayers with lowto moderate levels of income, especially those ages 60 and older.
