Texas voters approve 11 constitutional amendments
Cherokee County voters say ‘no’ to three amendments
      Texas voters approved all 11 of the proposed constitutional amendments Nov. 3. However, voters in Cherokee County said no to three of the propositions. Propositions One, Four and Five were rejected.

Lions Club slates Yule parade
      The Alto Lions Club will sponsor this year’s Christmas parade at 6 p.m. Monday, Dec. 14, in downtown Alto. Those wishing to participate are encouraged to meet at 5:30 p.m. at the Missionary Baptist Church. This year’s parade theme is Colors of Christmas.” A $50 prize will be awarded to the entry judged to have the best use of the theme.

John McCloskey discussed abandoned dogs Oct. 29
      John McCloskey was speaker for the Oct. 29 Rusk Lions Club meeting. He was accompanied to the meeting by his wife, Libby. The McCloskeys moved to East Texas in 1978 and over the next few years found themselves surrounded with abandoned dogs. At present they have more than 30 dogs at their place in Maydelle.

Brenda Dominy switches parties
      Long-time Democrat Justice of the Peace Precinct 1 Brenda Dominy has announced her bid for reelection, this time on the Republican ballot. Judge Dominy has served in her position since being elected in 1999.

H1N1 vaccines arrive
      The Cherokee County Health Department has received a small amount of flu vaccines, said Rhonda Jones, staff member. The Rusk health department clinic has 10 doses of seasonal flu mist ( for children 24 months – 18 years; five doses of H1N1 inactivated vaccine (injection); and 28 doses of H1N1 live, attenuated vaccine (nasal spray).

New Summerfield Lions plan bake sale
      The New Summerfield Lions Club will sponsor a Thanksgiving bake sale at the Tri-County Livestock Barn on U.S. Highway 79 E. beginning at 5 p.m. Nov. 20. Democrats slate potluck supper Thursday, Nov. 19
      Cherokee County Democrats will sponsor a potluck supper at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 19, in the fellowship hall of Shady Grove Church of Christ near Rusk. To get to the church turn east on U.S. Highway 84 toward Reklaw. Drive approximately 7.5 miles and turn right on FM 2962. Shady Grove is about half a mile on the left in the trees.

      The Cherokee County Republican Club will meet at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 1 at The Legacy, 782 CR 1511 Jacksonville. Jacksonville Library sponsors book sale
      The Friends of the Library Book Sale is scheduled from Friday, Nov.13- Sunday, Nov. 15, at the Jacksonville Public Library, 502 S. Jackson Street. Area schools celebrate Veterans’ Day; program planned in downtown Rusk
      The Alto High School Student Council will honor veterans with an assembly and program at 9 a.m. Wednesday. Veterans are asked to sign in at the Student Council table (located at the main gym inside entrance) by 8:45 a.m. in order to be recognized during the ceremony. Assistance for disabled persons will be available.

2009 Horsepower Expo, CAN-AM finals set this weekend
      Roaring engines, smashed vehicles and tons of mud will be heard and seen this weekend at the Horsepower Expo and Can-Am finals at the 4,000 acre Mud Creek Off Road Park. The park is located between Jacksonville and New Summerfield on U.S. Highway 79.

Thanksgiving speaker announced
      The Rev. Mike Bradford, pastor of the Eastside Baptist Church will be the speaker for Rusk’s annual Thanksgiving service. Local residents will gather at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 24, at the high school auditorium for this special service sponsored by the Rusk Ministerial Alliance.

     A ribbon cutting ceremony was held Oct. 23 to welcome Verizon Wireless into the Jacksonville Chamber of Commerce. Tim Hooker and his staff offer cell phone equipment and service to local citizens.
