Texas' state veterinarian to retire Dec. 31; nationwide executive search to be conducted
     Dr. Bob Hillman, Texas’ state veterinarian and executive director of the Texas Animal Health Commission (TAHC), has announced that he will retire December 31, ending his nearly seven-year tenure with the state’s livestock and poultry health regulatory agency.  The TAHC’s 13 governor-appointed commissioners will establish a committee to conduct a nationwide search to fill Dr. Hillman’s position.

Gov. Rick Perry appoints 5 to Western States Water Council
      Gov. Rick Perry has appointed five members to the Western States Water Council for terms to expire at the pleasure of the governor. The council consists of representatives appointed by the governors of 18 western states. The council seeks to accomplish cooperation among western states in the conservation, development and management of water resources, and provide a forum for the exchange of views, perspectives, and experiences among member states.

GO TEXAN Restaurant Round-Up Sept. 28-Oct. 2
     Agriculture Commissioner Todd Staples joined Farm Credit today to officially kick-off the GO TEXAN Restaurant Round-Up – a statewide dine-out event, Sept. 28-Oct. 2, that showcases restaurants serving locally produced foods and wines, with some proceeds benefiting area food banks.

Texas WIC switching to healthier foods
     Texas will begin offering new, healthier food choices to WIC participants starting Oct. 1. Changes are being made nationally to the federal Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) to give participants healthier options, reduce obesity and encourage breastfeeding.
