Andrea White makes campaign stop in Jacksonville
Book author speaks to Cherokee County Democratic Women
      Andrea White admitted that when her husband, Bill, decided to run for mayor of Houston, she was less than 100 percent enthusiastic. The Phi Beta Kappa graduate, UT law graduate and partner in a Houston law firm delved into a mid-life career change at the age of 40. She had begun writing books. She was on a roll and wasn’t sure she wanted to give it up.

New Summerfield School News
     Parents of students in the sixth grade are asked to attend the iStudy Parent/Student Orientation, which will take place on Thursday, September 24 at 6:30 p.m. in the cafetorium. District technology director Kevin Bryan will discuss the goals and policies of the program and iPods will be distributed to students.

     Stick horse jockeys raced for the finish line Saturday at the Sunflower Derby, a fund-raising event to benefit the Nan Travis Foundation in Jacksonville.

Sons of Confederate Veterans dedicate 2 Rusk County markers
      Sons of Confederate Veterans Cross of Saint Andrew Camp #2009 of Cherokee County held a double military grave marker dedication Saturday, Sept. 19 in the Minden area of Rusk County. Markers were dedicated for two forgotten soldiers who served in the southern army during the war between the states. The veterans honored were Pvt. John Deason Jr. of Company B, 3rd Texas Cavalry and Pvt.

Flu season has arrived in county
      The flu season has arrived. Seasonal flu shots are available at the county health department offices in Rusk and Jacksonville. Cost is $20 or free with a Medicare card. H1N1 vaccine is expected to arrive in mid-October. Persons who are sick and have fever are asked by health care personnel to stay at home.

      Pink Diva golf tournament Oct. 24 The Rusk Chamber of Commerce’s Pink Diva Lady’s Golf Tournament has been rescheduled for Saturday, Oct. 24 at Birmingham Forest Golf Club in Rusk. Check-in will start at 8 a.m. with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. Each team may have up to four players with only one single digit golfer.

      Shoppers at Brookshire Bros. in Rusk got a little more than they bargained for last Wednesday morning. A 1998 Plymouth Neon, driven by Rebecca McKnight, collided with a trailer and a parked vehicle before pulling into a handicapped parking slot.
