Meeting for Maydelle Centenntial is Sept. 12
      The planning committee for the Maydelle Centennial Iron Horse celebration will meet at 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 12, at Bertha’s Cafe. All interested persons are invited to attend. The centennial event will benefit the Maydelle VFD. Proceeds from the event will go toward payment of the fire department’s share of a new water truck grant.

President Obama’s speech not aired live in Cherokee County’s public schools
Most allow re-broadcast opportunities with parental permission
      President Barack Obama’s Tuesday morning speech to school children was not aired at Cherokee County schools. All county school districts elected not to show the live broadcast. The majority of the superintendents said the broadcast was scheduled at 11 a.m., which is during the lunch periods. Others said they did not want to disrupt the regular educational program.

TNT participants collect food donations
Food items for Good Samaritan were given in lieu of admission
      The sixth annual Thespians ‘N Training (TNT) summer camp recently ended at Cherokee Civic Theatre but the campers’ good work goes on. Admission to the TNT Grand Finale Showcases was free for family, friends and the general public but CCT did accept donations of non-perishable food items for the Good Samaritan in lieu of tickets.

North Cherokee County VFD hosts banquet Aug. 29; awards scholarship
      A banquet for members of the North Cherokee County Volunteer Fire Department was held Aug. 29 at the Mixon First Southern Baptist Church. Chief Danny Rozell presented the first Earl Fails Memorial Firemen Scholarship Fund to Jerry D. Weems from Mixon. Mr. Weems will attend the Kilgore College Fireman Academy.

      Approximately 500 persons attended the ninth annual Texas Potjie Festival at the Rusk KOA park last weekend. Last year approximately 350 persons were in attendance at the event at the KOA campground.
