Life skill classes underway
      Summer life skill classes began June 16 and will continue through July 14. Sessions are every Tuesday from 10-11 a.m. at the Cherokee County Courthouse Annex, 165 E. 6th St., Room 102, in Rusk. Lorri Essary of East Texas Council on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse will discuss the "ABCs of addiction" at the July 14 meeting.

Rail authority appoints subcommittees to pursue grants
      A special meeting of the Texas State Railroad Authority was held last Wednesday to pursue several pending grants. Attorney Ron Stutes of Tyler said, "It's a rebooting of the time line in the mechanics of money" to support TSR, operated by American Heritage Railways of Texas.

Family, friends ask community to 'Pray for Hannah'
      Four-year-old Hannah Collie has already gone through more turmoil than some people go through in a lifetime. In August 2007, she received a heart transplant after a ninehour procedure. Each time an obstacle has presented itself, little Hannah has overcome it. Family, friends and loved ones are hoping she will be able to overcome once more.

Public hearing will discuss apartments
      Public input is sought concerning a proposed apartment complex on Cherokee Street. The Rusk City Council has scheduled a hearing for 5 p.m. Thursday, July 16 at the council chambers at 219 S. Main St. Builders of the project will be available to answer questions.

Jury selection underway for embezzlement trial
      Theft charges against Doris Robinson, 60, a former Rusk city employee, are scheduled to go before a jury this week. Jury selection began Tuesday morning in Judge Bascom Bentley III's 369th District Court. The Rusk City Council met at noon Monday to hear reports from its attorney, Larry Sinclair, concerning the case.

Alzheimer's support meetings postponed
      Meetings for the Alzheimer's support group are postponed until Sept. 3. The group normally meets on the first Thursday of the month at the Southern Cherokee Federal Credit Union. For additional information, call Bobbie Orsack at (903) 683-5438.

Concert benefits Rusk Good Samaritan, Ministerial Alliance
      The Texas All State Youth Choir and Band will present a concert at 6 p.m. Saturday, July 11, in the sanctuary of First Baptist Church, 372 E. Fourth St., Rusk. There is no admission charge but a love offering will be taken to benefit the Good Samaritan and Rusk Ministerial Alliance.

Navy Reserve Commander Hagens deployed to Germany
      Navy Reserve Cmdr. Debra G. Hagens has been mobilized for deployment to Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, Germany. The medical center is the largest U.S. hospital outside the continental U.S. whose medical staff members have provided health care to more than 53,000 wounded warriors serving in Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom.
