New permits show building boom in Rusk
Convenience stores scramble to stock beer, wine after vote

Notices of intentions to seek permits have been published recently in the Cherokeean Herald for six businesses: Skeeters, Runnin' Rudy's, Katie's Pantry, Valero, J&P Kwik Stop and Brookshire Bros.
Two of the convenience stores have obtained building permits totaling $211,297 to expand their space to accommodate new coolers.
Voters approved a proposition authorizing the sale of beer and wine on May 9.
State permits are expected within four to six weeks from the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission.
Construction is underway at J&P Kwik Stop, 157 W. Sixth St., and Thompson Oil's
Valero Station on U.S. Highway 69 at 706 N. Dickinson Dr.
Josh Crisp applied for the permit on behalf of JRC Construction for the $121,297 permit at the Valero station on May 18.
Jimmy Isaacs applied for a $90,000 building permit for J&P Kwik Stop on June 18.
The J&P project will include a 30 by 40 foot room for coolers and 20 by 40 foot area for a store room. The addition will be constructed of concrete blocks with a metal roof.
The JRC project will be an 836-square-foot structure with a hollow frame and a metal roof. Included in the project is an 18 by 31 foot drive-through lane. The entire construction including the store addition and the drivethrough area will be 62 by 31 feet. A demolition permit was also issued for the site to allow the removal of a car wash to make room for the building extension and drive through facility.
Other building permits
In other recent building permits issued by the city of Rusk, a demolition permit was issued to Wallace-Thompson at 219 S. Barron for a onefamily dwelling. The March 16 permit was for $50 labor.
The two building permits were among 19 issued between Jan. 1 and last week. Permits totaled $407,690 during the first six months of 2009.
In addition to the $211,297 in permits issued for J&P Kwik Stop and JRC Construction, other business building permits were issued to United Country and Prosperity Bank. United Country's permit was issued on Feb. 2 to remodel the company's building at 211 N. Main for $18,000. Prosperity Bank's permit was for $31,000 for repair to its building at 1217 E. Fourth St. on April 29.
A permit was issued on May 4 to Faith Holy Tabernacle for $200 to construct a concrete handicap ramp.
Home construction permits included an in-ground swimming pool for $29,694 issued to Raine Bradford, 275 W. Crockett St. on June 25; and a permit for a $39,500 swimming pool for Mike Ross at 285 Marshall St.
Home additions included an addition to the home of Myrma Elevera at 630 Jordan St. for $15,000 on Jan. 21; $300 for sidewalk repair at the home of Joseph Cavanza, 225 Henderson St., on Feb. 2; $200 to enlarge the porch of the Walter Wells Jr. residence at 146 Jared St. on Feb. 26; Lake Settle, 1905 Marshall, a $4,515 cover and porch issued April 6; Mike Murray, 294 W. Sixth St., a permit issued April 15 for an addition for $27,000; Lynda Hudson, 178 N. Pate St., a patio with a lean-to issued April 8 for $1,500.
Carports and garage permits included: Larry Robert- son, 318 Guinn St., $19,000 for a garage and carport combination issued on April 23; and Jesse Clark, March 10 for a private garage at 306 Cherokee St. for $250.
Fence and privacy fence permits issued included: Don Jones, 120 Tiffany, a privacy fence for $5,500 issued on Jan. 7; Ken and Alison Dotson, 319 W. Fourth St., a privacy fence for $2,500 issued on April 23; Yvonne Tyler, 270 W. Sixth St., a fence for $1,200 issued on June 4; and Fred Huffman, 775 Euclid, a privacy fence for $984 issued on June 15.
