Thornburg
     Mr and Mrs Robert Jones of Kokomo, Ind., formerly of Alto, announce the engagement of their daughter, Amy Shiloh Jones, to Joshua Lee Thornburg, son of Kevin Thornburg of Bloomington, Ind. and Lisa Castaneda of Chinco Valley, Ariz. Miss Jones is the granddaughter of Alva Joy Jones of Alto and Jerry Jones of Tyler. She is currently attending Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis pursuing a degree in English secondary education. Mr. Thornburg will graduate in August with a bachelor degree in criminal justice from Indiana University at Kokomo. An August wedding is planned in Indianapolis, Ind.

Church celebrates birthday
110 YEARS OLD
      The Camp Ground Baptist Church will observe its 110th birthday with an all day celebration beginning at 10 a.m. Sunday, June 28. Dinner will be served on the ground and the Southern Plainsmen from Hornbeck, La. will present special entertainment.

     Rusk resident named to Harding University dean's list Valerie Dilliard of Rusk was among the Harding University students included on the dean's list for grades achieved during the spring semester. She is a senior majoring in social work.

      Scholarships from the Rusk High School Alumni Association were announced at the annual school scholarship banquet May 19.

Library Study Club installs new officers
      Mary Hassell was hostess for the May 13 meeting of the Rusk Library Study Club. This was the final meeting of the season. Following the Mexican food luncheon, installation of new officers was conducted by Ollie Parrott, outgoing president.

Hendrick family reunion will be June 27 at Camp Ground Baptist Church
      The annual Hendrick family reunion will be at 11 a.m. June 27 at the Camp Ground Baptist Church, Highway 294 W., Alto. A covered dish luncheon will begin at noon. A short business meeting will be conducted following lunch. Annual cemetery dues are $20 and may be mailed to Hendrick Cemetery, in care of Butch Holcomb, 3325 CR 2313, Rusk 75785.

UM Army will visit Rusk for home repairs
      The UM Army will be in Rusk the week of June 21-27. The group is composed of high school and college students who come to do work on homes at their own expense. Home owners having repairs that they cannot do themselves are asked to contact the First United Methodist Church at (903) 683-4675. The youth will fix-up and paint homes.

Fresh produce sought
      Fresh produce is always welcome at the Good Samaritan. Persons with extra vegetables they would like to donate to needy persons are asked to take them to the Good Samaritan during regular hours, Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings.

     Kyle Landrum received his bachelor's degree in English May 15 at Texas A&M. On hand for the event were his parents, Kim and David Landrum of Huntsville, formerly of Alto.

Rusk will honor veterans July 3-4
      Gene Mahan, a former Marine, whose wartime exploits took him from World War II, at the age 15, through the Korean War, will be this year's grand marshal for the Rusk Rotary Club's "Patriotism on Parade," at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 4.

UMC Bishop appoints Rev. McMahon pastor
      Rev. Joel McMahon IV, is the new senior pastor at Jacksonville First United Methodist Church. Rev. McMahon was appointed by Bishop Janice Riggle Huey of the UMC Texas Annual Conference in Houston in May. He previously served Methodist churches in Kingwood, Overton, Hawkins and most recently the Friendship United Methodist Church in Porter.

Kenneth White heads American Legion post
      Kenneth White of Rusk was elected American Legion commander and adjutant at the May 26 post meeting. Jim Cromwell of Jacksonville was elected judge advocate and Jimmy Dishman of Jacksonville, chaplain. Brad Christopher, a Rusk High School junior, will represent the post at Boys State camp on the University of Texas campus in Austin.

Historic yard art
     These historical pieces of yard art were made at the old Rusk prison. The top photo pictures a cast iron pedestal flower planter and the bottom photo pictures a flower urn. They are more than 100 years old and were crafted and assembled by prisoners at the Rusk Penitentiary at the turn of the 20th century. Two urns and two planters can be seen in Max Schochler's front yard on Sixth Street, just off the square. They formerly were in the yard of his grandparents on Barron Street.

     First Place in the Relay for Life Team Journey Fishing Tournament/Family Fun Day last spring at Rusk State Hospital Lake was Nathan Hawthorne. Mr. Hawthorne is pictured with his children. He was presented a new rod/reel from the Oakland Store by Journey Team member Gary Williams.

Puppy love
