New veterans hospital planned for Tyler

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs has awarded a grant to the city of Tyler to construct a 160-bed extended-care facility.

The facility will be on 20 acres donated by the University of Texas Health Science Center at Tyler. It will be constructed adjacent to the school's U.S. 271 campus with access to I-20. The federal economic stimulus plan provides $17.4 million for construction of the Tyler facility along with one in Houston.

The extended-care facility is slated to open in 2010, with construction possibly beginning in June.
