Texas Senate works late to save bills
     Senate works late to pass legislation that died in the House because of the fight over voter ID. Wednesday, Senators looked for bills with broad enough captions to permit bills that already passed the Senate to be amended on. Senate rules that require amendments to be related, or germane, to the caption of the bill. Senators were under additional pressure as they faced a midnight deadline, the latest that bills could be considered before the body.

JP wants to change billing software, collection agent
      A request from Justice of the Peace James Morris, Precinct 3, was tabled Tuesday by Cherokee County commissioners. Judge Morris appeared before the court asking to change his collection agent and his collection software. He is the only justice of the peace wanting to change.

Good Samaritan needs help with replacing roof
      The Rusk Good Samaritan needs help with the cost of replacing its roof. Insurance reimbursement and a $500 grant from Rotary helped, but the organization is still $1,600 short. Any donation, $1-$100 or more, will be appreciated. Funds are needed by May 29.

Branded by Christ play day and wild horse ministry planned June 6
      The Branded by Christ Cowboy Church will hold a free play day and wild horse ministry on June 6. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. and events start at 10 a.m. Four free classes include barrels, poles and keyhole. For jackpot barrels, a $20 entry fee will be charged. All participants must have their current Coggins. Prizes and trophies will be given away.

Alto yearbooks on sale
      The Alto High School 2009 yearbook, "Famous in a Small Town," are currently on sale for $50. Personalized yearbooks with a name on the cover are $55. Yearbooks will be shipped to the school in September and a limited number are available.

Rusk Athletics Booster Club meeting set for June 2
      The Rusk Athletics Booster Club will hold a meeting at 6 p.m. June 2 in the Rusk High School cafeteria to discuss football programs, membership and fundraising for next year. Anyone interested in helping the booster club is invited.

Classic 4-H to host Family Fun Day May 30
      The Classic 4-H Club of New Summerfield will hold a free Family Fun Day camp from 5 p.m. until dark on Saturday, May 30 at the Shawnee Creek Ranch in Laneville. Campsites, hay rides, a camp fire, a petting zoo and fishing will be featured during the event. Games, prizes and some fishing equipment will be provided.

Wells church will dispose of old American, Texas flags
      Falvey Memorial Methodist Church at Wells and the Hudson Boy Scout Troop 590 will host a disposal of unusable American and Texas flags at the 11 a.m. worship service June 14 at the Wells church. Persons with flags to be disposed may take them to the church or make arrangements by calling (936) 867-4525.

      Art students of Tracey Hunt at Rusk Primary School will display their work in a gallery that extends down the hallways, into the computer lab and the school library. This is the first art show for student at the primary school.

Jeff Austin III named chairman elect of state banker's group
      Jeff Austin III, vice-chairman of Austin Bank in Jacksonville, was named chairmanelect of the Texas Bankers Association (TBA) for the 2009-10 fiscal year. Mr. Austin served as chairman of the TBA BankPac Committee from 1998-2000 and was elected to the TBA board of directors in 2005.

TNT registration is underway
      Cherokee Civic Theatre Inc. will conduct its "First Call" registration for the annual Thespians 'N Training (TNT) theatre arts camp. Young people learn acting and technical skills, culminating in one-act performances by each troupe on Aug. 1.

Reading program begins June 9 at Stella Hill Library
      The Stella Hill Memorial Library in Alto will begin its summer reading program at 10 a.m. June 9. Activities will continue each Tuesday until July 21. Beginning June 1, the library will be open on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday mornings from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

TxDOT begins pavement repairs in Cherokee County
      Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) crews were scheduled to begin pavement repair operations on various highways in Cherokee county Tuesday morning. The work is scheduled to proceed in the following order beginning with U.S. Highway 79 at the Anderson County line. Construction will continue at FM 343 in Rusk, SH 294 west of Alto and the intersection of U.S.

Women's Day planned at church May 28-29
      Faith Holy Tabernacle Church, 485 N. Main, Rusk, will sponsor a women's conference at 7 p.m. Thursday and Friday, May 28-29. Pastor Sam Willis invites all women of the community to attend. "There will be some awesome women of God speaking," he said.

Jarratt Cemetery Assn. meets June 6
      The annual memorial service and business meeting at the Jarratt Cemetery Association will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 6 at the cemetery. Registration of members and guests will begin at 10 a.m. The memorial service is at 10:30 a.m. and the business meeting and election of trustees will follow. Lunch will be at noon under the pavilion.
