Perks of membership
     Hazel and Bobby Tosh were awarded a $1,000 lifetime membership to the Heritage Center of Cherokee County. The presentation was done on the porch of the Bonner Bank building, recently moved next to the museum. In front (lto r) are Bonner family descendent Patsy Dawson, Kevin Stingley, Mrs. Tosh, Mr. Tosh and Sarah Summers. In the back row are Marvin Troublefield, Ruther McIntosh, Rachel Loden, Kenneth Welch, Don Woodard and Jim Cromwell.

Tomato Fest begins June 12
Ball opens festivities; activities close with June 13 street dance
      The 25th annual Jacksonville Tomato Fest is planned for June 12-13. Activities will begin with a Tomato Ball from 7-10 p.m. June 12 at the Landmark Restaurant.

Writers will meet May 26
      Inspirational Writers Alive! (IWA!) Tyler Chapter will meet at 6:45 p.m. May 26 at Lakeview Church of the Nazarene, outside Loop 323 at 10818 University Blvd, Tyler. Aspiring or seasoned writers, published or not, are invited. Those attending are asked to take three-five pages of written material for the reada round with extra copies if a critique is wanted.

Farm Bureau hosts spring Ag Day activities for students
4th graders learn about agriculture's impact
      Cherokee County Farm Bureau held its Spring Ag Day Monday, May 4, at the Texas State Railroad Park at Rusk. Fourth graders from Rusk Intermediate School learned about agriculture and its impact on everyday life.

Memorial Day salute
     Approximately 25 persons gathered on the courthouse lawn Memorial Day to remember the sacrifices of veterans. Sons of Confederate Veterans Cross of Saint Andrew camp No. 2009 of Cherokee County participated in the ceremony with a volley of gunfire. TDCJ Hodge employee arrested
      A Texas Department of Criminal Justice employee at the Hodge Unit in Rusk and his girlfriend have been arrested in connection with charges of attempting to hire a man to kill the woman's husband. Cathryn Lake, 51, and Rudolph Regalado, 48, are being held in the Smith County jail in lieu of posting a $2 million bond each.

Fans for elderly
     Robbie Tosh of Harry's Building Materials donates 12 fans to Roy Reynolds, president of the Rusk Rotary Club to be donated to elderly persons. Wallace-Thompson True Value will offer 20 inch box fans at a reduced price for this effort. Fans may be purchased at either business and will be picked up and distributed by the Rotary Club. Persons with good used fans may call Mr. Reynolds at (903) 683-1947.
