Kelsey Norton named to Scholastic All Stars
      Kelsey Norton of Rusk, a senior student at Brook Hill School in Bullard, has been named to the KTBB Scholastic All-Stars. She was one of 23 selected from a list of 104 nominations from high school counselors. Miss Norton is the daughter of Dug and Tracy Norton of Rusk.

      A three-day tax holiday for certain energy-efficient appliances is planned for this weekend. The sales tax will be forgiven for following items if purchased during the weekend.

Rusk 7th grader selected for leadership camp
      Garret Ault, a seventh grader at Rusk Junior High School, has been selected to participate in the Texas Brigades wildlife leadership camp this summer. He was selected based on his academic records, interest in wildlife and natural resources and his leadership abilities.

$1,000 scholarship
     Casey Hudnall, Rusk High School senior, is congratuated by Tim McRae on being named Bill McRae Ford's $1,000 scholarship winner. Her parents are Trena Jones and Dennis Jones of Rusk. She plans to study agricultural business management in college. The scholarship is one of 452 scholarships awarded this year by Ford Division, Ford Motor Company Fund and Bill McRae Ford to FFA members planning to attend college. Additionally there will be five $1,000 scholarships given on behalf of Ford Motor Co.

INVENTORS
     Rusk Middle School seventh graders Ty Mason, Chase Goodwin and Hayden Curl hold an apple corer they invented for a school project. Leah Besson's seventh grade class was given the task of creating and building a compound machine. Candy drive
     The Jacksonville Public Library wrapped up its month-long candy drive Thursday, April 30. Due to the overwhelming response of library patrons and staff, the library collected more than 100 pounds of candy and other sweet treats to be sent to troops overseas through Soldier's Angels.       Mr. and Mrs. Billy Mason of Alto announce the engagement of their daughter, Anna Layne, to Cody Lee Iley, son of Mr. and Mrs. David Iley of Grand Prairie. Miss Mason is a graduate of Alto High School, where she currently teaches biology.

$6,148 raised
     Rusk Elementary School raised $6,148.17 in a math-a-thon to benefit St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital. More than 60 students participated in the event in which Mackenzie Ward, right, was top collector with $575. Prizes ranged from t-shirts to a math-a-thon backpack. Teacher Linda Nichols coordinated the math-a-thon.

Cody Bolton named as Pineywoods District FFA officer
      Cody Bolton of the Jacksonville FFA was named the 2009-10 district secretary at the Pineywoods District Convention in March. He will receive his Lonestar degree, with two others from the Jacksonville FFA, at the annual convention in July.

      The annual Rusk Memorial Day ceremonies will be held at the veterans marker on the courthouse lawn. Frank Bowden will be speaker for the event honoring America's war dead. The Rev. Lee Welch, pastor of the First Baptist Church, will offer the invocation.

Armed Forces Day observance set at TSR Palestine depot
      Memorial Day celebration honoring the armed forces is planned for Friday- Sunday, May 22-24 at the Palestine depot of the Texas State Railroad. The event is organized by individuals from the community. Activities will begin at 8 a.m. each day. There will be a Huey helicopter fly-in and rides, military re-enactors, military armament train arrival on Friday.

      The annual memorial service and business meeting at the Jarratt Cemetery Association will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 6 at the cemetery.
